Orbit reduces food waste and saves money with smart inventory and recipe suggestions.
Project Info
For my university dissertation, I explored food waste, a major issue that significantly impacts climate change. My research revealed that households are major contributors to food waste in the supply chain, largely due to fixable problems. My solution is a smart inventory system to address this.

Design process
The design process began with research into the scale and causes of food waste in UK households, revealing that poor planning, over-shopping, and misjudging portion sizes lead to significant waste, costing households £770 annually. Analysing competitors like smart tags, food tracking apps, and fridge cameras highlighted gaps in ease of use, accuracy, and relevance. Initial findings showed that users aren't fully aware of the cost of food waste, making monetization challenging. Inspired by Tesco Clubcard’s model, the solution focuses on seamlessly integrating shopping data into a household’s food inventory, automating data entry to address key pain points and improve the app’s practicality.
